The Importance of Textiles and Fibres in Fashion: Why You Should Know

Textiles are the basis for all clothing, accessories, and fashion products. They determine the garment fit, feel, and performance. They drive creativity in fashion, help functionality by using performance textiles for sports, weather and medical applications, and are incredibly useful for sustainability with eco-friendly fabrics like organic cotton, recycled polyester, and bio-fibres.

  1. Natural Fibres

Natural Fibres are split into two categories: Cellulosic fibres which are made primarily of cellulose, a natural polymer found in plant cell walls. And Protein fibres which are made primarily of protein created by animals. The quality of natural fibres varies by source and growing conditions, and each fibre has unique traits that can’t be chemically replicated.

  1. Man Made Fibres

Man-made fibres are created through industrial manufacturing processes. They are made one of 2 ways, either by modifying natural materials or creating entirely new substances from chemicals. They changed fashion by making it more affordable and accessible with durable mass-produced clothing and created fabrics with special and unique features such as stretch and water resistance. They are cheaper alternatives with high demand, and some try to have sustainable efforts

  1. Why Knowing the Different Fibres is Important

It’s important to know what goes into our clothes and the type of fibre used in the fabrics, clothing, accessories, and household items we use every day. Why? Because it helps us make better choices when it comes to buying garments. Knowledge of what to wear based on what activities are happening throughout the day and what materials are better for our bodies and environment are necessary when deciding what to buy and wear. Hot day? Best not to wear polyester. Want to value sustainability? Cotton’s a go to! Going to be near flammable areas? Stick to wool!

  1. The Different Uses for Fibres

Active wear, swim wear, backpacks, hats, bags, bedding, cozy sweaters, t shirts, coats, rugs, medical accessories, you name it! Fibres are used in everything we use day to day. Different fibres have many characteristics that are shared but also have their own unique contents that either benefit or negatively affect our lives. Example, Polyester is incredibly long lasting which is good for getting multiple uses out of outfits however it is not biodegradable and is not sustainable. It also retains odours, so don’t wear it if you’re going to sweat!

  1. The Positives and Negatives of Common Fibres

All fibres, both natural and man-made have positives and negatives to them when it comes to garments and how they are processed/made, how they function and what kind of use a person is looking to get out of certain garments. Cotton (natural fibre) positives are that it is soft and breathable, absorbent, biodegradable and durable. Negatives are that it wrinkles easily, is prone to shrinkage, and it requires a significant amount of water for farming.  Polyester (man-made fibre) positives are that its durable, wrinkle-resistant, mold resistant and enhances durability with other fibres. Negatives are that it’s not breathable, retains odours, and is not biodegradable.

  1. How to Take Care of Your Garment

Always make sure to read the tags on the inside of your garment! They tell you exactly what they’re made of and how to wash, dry, and take care of each item. It’s important to never cut these tags off and to follow the instructions because if your shirt is made of 98% nylon and you put it in the dryer, watch out! That outfit will no longer be a solid (nylon melts in heat)
